Unlocking the Mystery: Why Do English Learners Struggle to Speak Although They Know A Lot of English?

I'm scared of speaking English how can I change it

Physicist Richard Feynman once said, “If you can’t explain something in simple terms, you don’t understand it.”

I agree.

So, for 20 years I’ve looked for the best way to explain:

1. Why many English learners know a lot of English, yet struggle to speak

2. How you really become fluent

So I wanted to ask if the following makes sense to you:

You might know the story of how I struggled to learn different languages for 15 years…

And how I thought the problem might be because I was too old, or because I didn’t know enough words, or because I didn’t get enough speaking practice.

But one day, while watching some Japanese children playing with their parents in a park, I finally understood my real problem:

I realized that I couldn’t express myself fluently because I was learning Japanese as a SECOND language.

This means I was studying Japanese through English translations. Lesson vocabulary was also slower, clearer, and often completely different from what natives spoke.

So I always felt unsure if I was understanding or communicating correctly, needed time to think and translate before I spoke, and I didn’t feel comfortable speaking.

Ultimately, it didn’t matter how old I was, where I lived, how much I studied, or even how much I tried to speak…

…Because the REAL problem was the learning method itself, which STOPPED me from developing speaking confidence and fluency.

The Japanese children, however, learned Japanese as a FIRST language.

Lessons were all in everyday Japanese that the children could understand, without translations.

Plus, a great variety of real-life examples and stories automatically developed their listening, pronunciation, sense for correct speech, and speaking confidence.

Fluent speech was the natural result, because the children felt certain that they would communicate correctly!

Once I understood this, I started learning Japanese as a FIRST language. And that’s how I finally got fluent.

It’s also why I teach you English as a FIRST language, today. 🙂

Everything I do is based on this one idea. So please reply and let me know if it makes sense… Or if there’s anything that’s unclear.

The better I get at explaining this, the more people I can help.

So thank you!
