Unlike the tribal era, where large muscular guys imposed their will by force in an act of power, men today have multiple domains to master and become dominant in to attain power. However, this vastness has also made it infinitely more difficult for men to apply conviction and self-determination. As I have mentioned before, personality is everything.

Study your personality. Spend about $100 on several personality tests to really get a sense of which traits stand out that define you. Take different tests and compare them. There are several traits that I will not go into detail about, but here is a list:

Introvert
Extrovert
Agreeableness
Disagreeableness
Conscientiousness
Openness/Creativity

Excellence is found in exploiting your traits. Once you have identified and acknowledged your personality type, find work or become productive in areas where those traits can be expressed. As you practice, you will become perfect. If you practice more, you will apply efficiency. The aim is to provide value that is largely built by your strengths. Your value becomes your signature. By doing so, you become a “part of” the value itself, an indispensable component of it.

Speed separates you from others as the winner. Why? If you can deliver the most amount of productivity of labour in the shortest period of time, then you become an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Never let your specific knowledge self-automate. And don’t teach others 100% of what you know. The value you provide from your competence doesn’t happen on its own. You have to be a part of the system that generates the value. You have to ingrain yourself in it.

Leverage

It is infinitely better to occupy a sublime position within a moderately valued domain than to occupy a semi-competent position within a highly valued domain.

Achieving competence

Leveraging one’s competence is often achieved by exchanging things they generate with ease for stuff that is of value to them. This could be anything with a monetary, positional, tactical, or political worth to you; whatever it may be, it’s essential to first delve into what relies on your particular skill set in your circle of influence. Is there a person? A system? A department? Anything that is dependent on your expertise can then be unfairly manipulated and taken advantage of. Keep in mind also that the larger the scope of your competence, the more leverage it will provide.

Using specific knowledge to impose authority through leverage is a game played at the highest level of organizations. Businesses and politicians all leverage their value for positional advantage and power. Leveraging competence is an essential element that elevates you on the socio-economic ladder.
